HIT (High-Intensity Training) Brief, Intense, Infrequent Workouts!

What if I told you that you could get bigger and stronger than you've ever been by training only two to three times per week for no more than 30 minutes? Most likely all of you uninformed skeptics would call me a liar, the multi-setters would frantically stop reading, and the easy-way-out slackers would stare wide eyed with an unjustified gleam of hope.

It is that select, understanding breed who would continue reading and realize that I am promoting the all-too-sensible yet all-too-difficult concept of HIT. Otherwise known as High Intensity Training (a name well earned). HIT is bar-none the most difficult and most effective training program out there. HIT is a very broad term and can have many variations, but the basic concepts remain constant.

While many think that traditional strength training (volume) methods are the only source that is effective, high-intensity techniques provide efficient and productive alternatives that allow you to break through strength plateaus without increasing the length or number of your training sessions. Volume training does not do that!

HIT is much more difficult than the naked eye could ever fathom. HIT is based around infrequent workouts done at a high level of intensity, focusing on compound movements and progression. All exercises are taken to total failure.

HIT Protocol

I. High Intensity - To stimulate your body to make an adaptive change your exercise intensity must cross a certain threshold before your body will respond. By training to muscular failure, It sends an alarm to your body that more muscle and metabolic function are needed.

II. Duration - All of the workouts last 30 minutes or less. You get the minimum amount of exercise that will produce the stimulus for adaptation. Anything beyond this amount of exercise only acts to consume precious recovery resources.

III. Infrequent Workouts - Reaching the required stimulus intensity threshold consumes a large amount of your body's resources and the subsequent adaptive changes are metabolically expensive. Replenishing resources and making metabolic investments takes time. Therefore, reintroducing the stimulus (a workout) too soon will interrupt these processes.

IV. Progress Chart - Keeping precise records of your workout performance allows you to monitor your progress on every exercise of each workout.
